Engadget: iPhone protest vid uses Apple's own words to support the "crazy ones"

A lot of people out there aren't too happy with Apple right now. Some of them express their displeasure with expletive-filled tirades in the comments section of any pertinent blog post they can find. Other, arguably more creative folks use the popular medium of the day to make the object of their frustration appear foolish and hypocritical in an entertaining manner. To witness just such a protest, head over to the video:

Tuaw.com: "iPhone Dev Team" issues statement

A spokesman for the iPhone Dev Team, the group that developed the iPhone unlock has issued a statement condemning Apple and promising a tool in the next week which will restore your iPhone to a factory-fresh state. The unlock, he writes, made the iPhone free and useful world-wide, not just in certain countries. The text of the statement, with modifications for grammar and spelling, follows after the break.

9/25 Statement from the iPhone unlockers

Based on download numbers, the iPhone Dev Team believes that, worldwide, several hundred thousand people have unlocked their iPhones. That number continues growing every day. The removal of the lock, a bug, was a major step forward in the iPhone development. It made the iPhone free and useful to anyone, not only to those in certain countries.

Apple now announces that the next firmware update, expected later this week, will possibly break the handset of all of us free users in the World. It speaks of "damage" done to the firmware and "unauthorized access" to our own property, The removal of those firmware problems, which were built in in favor for AT&T, does not cause "damage" as they want to make us believe.

We will provide you with a tool in the next week which will be able to recover your nck counter and seczones and even enables you to restore your phone to a Factory-like state.

In the meantime we advise you not to update your free iPhone with the upcoming firmware (1.1.1). Wait for the next version to be fixed to work properly with your carrier and not break your phone.

Q&A from Gizmodo.com:

Does unlocking software cause "irreparable damage" to the iPhone?

No, it doesn't. The only thing that the anySim software does is modify part of the firmware so it's not limited to use only AT&T SIM cards. Modify is not "damaging." It just means that specific values in the seczone have been replaced by others. Technically, according to the Dev Team:

"It modifies the firmware to accept any given nck to open the phone for any carrier. This causes the phone to write a bogus values into the seczone as an unlock token."

This means that values can be written and changed back to their original state easily, just as easily as they were originally changed to allow the unlock.

Could Apple have been able to upgrade iPhones without the likely possibility of bricking the iPhone? (According to Apple, their firmware will likely and "permanently" make the device "inoperable.")

Yes, it could have been done. As someone in the Dev Team core puts it:

"Apple has multiple ways of upgrading the [firmware of the] baseband [radio chip] without committing a 500,000-phone massacre.
First, they can issue a secpack [security pack] for everything in the firmware. They could simply issue one of these to restore the value if a regular token is not detected, thus rewriting this part to its original state. This process would most likely defeat any unlock available, Dev Team or iPhone Sim Free, without bricking the iPhone in any way.

New firmware updates could also employ new firmware which closes the loophole that allows the use of a secpack for other operations. They could make this method of updating even resistant to tampering or abuse for a unlock. The possibilities are there."

So yes, as you can see, Apple could do the described operation, changing the values back to its original state then forcing a restore to factory of the whole firmware.

Is the total bricking a real possibility?

It's not clear if Apple will finally brick or not the iPhone in the next update. Or what they mean with "permanently inoperable." The Dev Team speculates that "it won't be a true bricking at all. The firmware would probably roll back to a default state similar to its state after manufacturing. This state is indicated by a lost IMEI number, which results in the iPhone being unusable with any network."

In fact, this is what you will get if you flash a retail firmware in any phone that has been previously updated.

But is this problem permanent?

No, it's not. The problem is not permanent and can be reverted, as the Dev Team points out:

"Currently this state is easy to fix, but future [hardware] updates will just close the flashing flaw and let you alone with your factory-like phone."

After the bricking, can Apple provide a way to revert iPhones to factory status and re-lock iPhones, patching them so the current unlock solution can't be applied?

Yes, definitely. See above. If the iPhone Dev Team hackers can do it, working with no documentation, Apple engineers can do exactly the same.

Will the iPhone Dev Team revert the iPhone to its original state

Yes, they have said before they are working on this and they have code already written to do so.

This code, however, won't unlock the iPhone again, it'll just revert it to factory state. New unlocking software may come soon thereafter. There's more information on this, but we can't use it in this article yet.

Comparison: Firmware 1.0.2 vs Firmware 1.1.1

Apple just released a new Firmware update (version 1.1.1) which will re-lock the iPhone and erase all third party applications.

CAUTION: DO NOT UPDATE YOUR IPHONE WITH THIS NEW FIRMWARE VERSION!

Here is a comparison chart from Gizmodo. Basically this update will cripple your iPhone, only one noteworthy new feature has been introduced: Wifi iTunes Music Store compatibility! Now you can purchase Music from ANYWHERE (within the U.S. boundaries). Great!

What is Hematite Jewelry?

Hematite is a mineral of which consits of iron, it is used like many other minerals and elements to create great designer jewelry.Hemaite comes from the word hema which is greek and means blood. Why? well when it was first discovered it displayed a very reddish tone.Athough this mineral has a very polished look and can display colors of gray, black and sometimes can have a reddish brown appeal. When Hematite is polished it gives off a very metal look. Hematite is also used for industrial purpose of which the hematite which displays more red tone is ued for industrial purposed and the more metallic materials are used for designing jewelry. Another type of hematite is magnetic hematite of which is used in some jewelry and is actually used for therapeutic purposes. Now there are some that question this type of therapy and it is not supported by all, but some do believe that its is very beneficial. Although not all people should subject themselves to magnetic therapy, it is not safe for children under seven, pregnant women, people with pacemakers, and those undergoing electronic test.

iPhones arrived in India & shipped!

Dear all,

Finally the news everybody was waiting for:

Today morning the iPhones arrived in India, today afternoon we shipped our first units & we had some hand to hand delivery in Delhi already!

Guys, this Phone gives you a completely new experience! It compares to nothing else! It's so well done! It took me 10 minutes to sync all my stuff to it, all my contacts, music, all my bookmarks etc. I immediately added my most important contacts into favourites. It's a very powerful way to make calls to people to whom you talk very frequently. Simply tap their name and you can talk to them, meanwhile you can check out Google maps, browse the web, write Emails, or do anything else the iPhone can do. It's multitasking. I can talk on speakerphone while making a photo and sending it through Email simultanuously, through Airtels gprs/edge network or through available Wifi networks, without interupting the conversation. To set up edge was a breeze (on Airtel), simply put: airtelgprs.com into the APN field, leave username and password fields blank and that's all, you're online! To join wifi networks simply tap on the Network which is available. It's that easy. SMS is wonderful. No bulky user interfaces, everything is smooth, easy to the eyes. You don't need to remember almost anything because everything on the iPhone is very intuitive. Forget about user manuals. This is the ultimate Phone. Ok, ok, enough praise. Here are some photos (click on it for larger view):

Even gemstones have hidden secrets they don’t like being publicized much. You’d think that after centuries in the limelight, almost everything to know about these simple stones would be out there in the open, but that hasn’t been the case - until now.
Sapphires

Sapphires for example, have always liked to consider themselves the perfect blue gem. It’s about time though that they come out of the jewelry box and stand proud. Sapphires are not just blue.

Pink Sapphire

Much like the changing color of fall leaves, Sapphires sparkle in a palette of colors from blue to pink, yellow to green and all the colors in-between. There are even colorless Sapphires that appear almost identical to diamonds yet are much less expensive.

Gemstones in the Corundum Group

Sapphires and their estranged gem relatives are both members of gem family called Corundum. It’s not a family you’d want to mess with in a dark alley. Members of the Corundum group are known for their extraordinary hardness (9 on the Mohs scale). Indeed their hardness is exceeded only by that of the diamond - and the diamond is the hardest mineral on Earth. Thanks to that hardness, sapphires are easy to look after, requiring no more than the usual care on the part of the wearer.

For thousands of years, Sapphires were hunted far and wide as the ultimate blue gemstone. The ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire that gave its blue reflection to the sky, hence the Latin name "sapphiru", which means blue.

The gem has long symbolized faith, remembrance, and enduring commitment. According to tradition, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred stone. This supposed "divine favor" is why sapphires often were the gem of choice for kings and high priests throughout history. In fact, the British Crown Jewels contain a number of notable sapphires. Prince Charles even gave Princess Diana a sapphire engagement ring.

But back to Sapphire’s sexy secret. The only color that Sapphire doesn’t come in is red. There is a red member of that ultra-hard Corundum family. But it isn’t called a Sapphire. It prefers to go by the name ‘Ruby’.

What is Onyx?

Onyx is usually used to describe the color of a stone but it is actually a gemstone. The word onyx meaning fingernail comes from the Greek times when colors from white to black were considered onyx and later the Romans used the term strictly for describing dark colors of black and deep brown. This precious gemstone is usually combined with pearls in a jewelry design and can also be carved for other spiritual designs. Onyx adds a rich look to any piece of jewelry. Onyx can be found in Brazil, Madagascar, and India. This stone is the alternate birthstone for February, and is even the mystical birthstone for December. Another interesting fact about this precious gemstone is that it is a good luck charm for those who have the astrological sign Leo. Therefore onyx can make a great gift for those whom have birthday in February, December and those whom are Leo’s. Although that’s not all the gemstone onyx is also know to be a 10th wedding anniversary gift. Just a little hint for those who are looking for that great gift, check out our onyx sterling silver item links.
There is more to this stone then what meets the eye; many people are unaware of its spiritual affects. Black onyx stones are known to help release you from negative emotions for example after a loose of a loved one some may feel sorrow or begin the grieving process. Onyx can help release those negative emotions. Onyx is also known to help end unhappy relationships or bothersome relationships. Therefore many people wear onyx to prevent themselves from having negativity toward them. It is known that black stones such as onyx can create an invisibility giving people self confidence, responsibility, it many also give someone a healthier ego. This is a very powerful gemstone that can also help individuals change their bad habits, or even calm a chaotic life.

Jewelry fashion is dynamic. Jewelers are always coming up with new designs and new materials from which jewelry can be fashioned. Even stunning pieces of jewelry may lose their popularity after a few years. Gold jewelry however is always in fashion. Jewelry collectors and even simple wearers like gold because it is beautiful and long lasting. Gold does not discolor because it almost never reacts with any other material. Rarely is someone allergic to gold so it always a good choice to go for gold.

When you are considering buying gold jewelry, you have to be familiar with the terminologies used. The purity of gold is measured in karats and the mark on the ring indicating this is a number followed by K (such as 24K, 18K, 12K). K stands for karat. 24K is pure gold. 18K is a mixture of 18 parts gold and 6 parts of a metal or a mixture of metals, making 18K 75% gold. 14K is 14 parts gold and 10 parts of a metal or a mixture of metals, making it 58.3% gold. The percentage of gold for 12K and 10K jewelries is also computed in the same way. In the United States, 10K is the minimum karat used in gold jewelries. Europe marks its gold jewelry differently. When the jewelry is 18K, it is marked 750 in Europe, indicating that it is 75% gold. 14K jewelry is marked 583 and 12K, 500, for 58.3% and 50% respectively.

Most gold jewelries should have a mark identifying its maker. This is really helpful when choosing your jewelry pieces. You might consider doing your research on gold jewelers before purchasing any jewelry. This way, you have a basic idea on jewelers that you prefer. If the piece you’re considering doesn’t have a trademark, it is better to look for another one.

Gold is not always alloyed with other metals. Sometimes it is just used as a coating for a base metal. Gold filled jewelries have a layer of karat gold wrapped around a base metal. The base metal used may vary. The gold content should be indicated on the piece such as 1/20 12K G.F. This indicates that the jewelry is 1/20th 12K gold by weight. Gold overlay and rolled gold plate are also terms used to indicate that a layer of gold (a minimum of 10 karats) is electronically bonded to a base metal. Abbreviations such as 12K Gold Overlay or 14K RGP indicates the percentage of gold used and the process of binding the gold to the metal. Gold plated jewelries are also available and the coating is usually thinner than in gold – filled jewelries so they easily fade.

When buying gold jewelry choose solid gold (even alloys are called solid gold) when you intend to wear it frequently. Gold-filled and gold-plated jewelries should be considered when they are only to be worn occasionally.

John Constable Portrait of Harriet Rhudde 1818

John Constable (1776-1837) One of England's best landscape painters and a member of the Royal Academy. Profile of Harriet Rhudde painted in watercolor on card. John Constable married Harriet Rhudde's niece, Maria Bicknell, and this portrait was probably painted in East Bergholt in 1818. The high back bonnet she wears was popular between 1815 and 1825, and the bonnet together with the details of the dress are consistent with a portrait date of 1818. The hallmarked frame engraved "Harriet Rhudde Died 1854" and housing the profile and white silk moire reverse under glass was made by C&W Pt. and assayed in London in 1818.

The wealthy Rev. Dr. Durand Rhudde (1735-1819), married Mary Shergold (1738-1811) in 1760 and had a son about whom seemingly nothing is known and two daughters: Marria Elizabeth born August, 22 1761 and Harriet whose birth date is unknown. Dr. Rhudde recieved a Doctorate of Divinity from King's College, Cambridge, and in 1763, he became vicar of St. Thomas, Southwark. According to the May 1819 edition of The Gentleman's Magazine, "Dr. Rhudde was a zealous and conscientious Divine, and throughout the long period of his existence lived much respected and esteemed." He followed in the footsteps of his father John Rhudde (1704-1778), who was vicar of Portesham and Weymouth pictured below in a 1757 mezzotint after (Solomon?) Williams held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

On June 1, 1795, Harriet married Edward Farnham (1753-1835) of Quorndon House in Leicestershire. Farnham was a wealthy landowner and the only brother of the Countess of Denibigh. They had a son, Edward Basil, and two daughters, Sarah Ann and Mary Eliza. In 1815 Edward Farnham became High Sheriff of Leicestershire. Harriet died on July 27, 1854. Her sister, Maria Elizabeth, married Charles Bicknell in 1787 at St. George Hanover Square, London and had a daughter, Maria Elizabeth Bicknell. John Constable proposed marriage to Miss Bicknell in 1811, but her grandfather, Dr. Rhudde objected to the union. That same year Constable painted a water color on paper portrait of East Bergholt Church (now housed in The Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, UK; pictured below), where Rhudde had been rector since 1786, and his mother gifted the picture to Dr. Rhudde. The elderly reverend remained unswayed and sent payment for the painting along with a letter of gratitude in order to dissolve any obligation to the painter.
Maria's father object to his daughter marrying a painter with little money and few prospects, and Dr. Rhudde threatened to disinherit the Bicknells, if they were unable to prevent the marriage. Harriet Rhudde Farnham likewise appears to have been against the marriage either because she shared her fathers opinion or for mercenary reasons - a change to the Reverend's will would have benefited her children. John earned money through this long interval of courtship by painting portraits, which held little interest for him, and which he viewed as an unwanted distraction from landscape painting. In a letter to Maria, he complained of his commission to copy the portrait of Lady Heathcote, "she will not sit to me though she wants many alterations from the original--but I can have prints, drawings and miniatures, locks of hair to do without end." Despite the objections of her father, aunt, and maternal grandfather, Maria and John married on October 2, 1816 at Saint Martin In the Fields, Westminster, London. John painted the portrait of his fiancee shortly before their marriage (pictured below). Within in a year or two, the tensions between the Contsables and the Rhudde and Bicknell families appear to have calmed significantly. John traveled to East Bergholt in 1818 to sell his father's house, and he brought his painting supplies intent on garnering portrait commissions for additional income. While there, he likely painted this portrait of "Aunt Farnham" in an effort to further improve family relations. Maria and John had seven children and inherited £20,000 from the estate of Charles Bicknell upon his death in 1828. Unfortunately, Maria died of consumption on 23 November of that same year. John mourned his wife for the remainder of his life, and described her as his "departed Angel...a devoted, sensible, industrious religious mother who was all affection."

A bit of Silver History

History

Jewelry has been used longer that you think it has been a part of our society since 3500 BC, when the people of Egypt created ornaments out of silver. Of which many may not know that the word “Sterling” means “Easterling”, which is a form of money also used in 12th century England. As we go through different trend is long lasting piece of metal never goes out of fashion.
Sterling silver is used mostly within the United States, and the lower percentages of silver can be found over in Europe where it might only contain 80% silver, which is not pure silver, and has been known to cause skin irritation for some who are allergic to certain metals. In there metals the silver will not tarnish, but the copper in the alloyed or combine metal will.

We all know that sterling silver is a very strong metal and that is because if is 92.5% pure silver and is 7.5% copper. Of which the copper is what gives the titanium strength and durability. Studying other metals you will also see that they are made of copper, which helps give them strength but silver is one metal that keeps its color once combined with another metal.

WT02 Watches - Keeping Fine Watches in Fine Form

By John Francis

High quality watches typically cost a large quantity of money, and it is unlikely, unless the watch’s owner is filthy rich and equally careless with his wealth, that an expensive watch will be tossed aside after a few years. The highest quality watches, from Rolexes to Bvlgaris, will likely be treasured for a generation or more. Even the highest quality watches, however, require regular servicing, which may mean a simple battery change or something more extensive, such as changing the rubber gaskets on a waterproof watch. How should a fancy watch owner go about finding a good service center, and what sort of servicing might be required?

First, before you take your precious watch, which cost you gobs of money, in for servicing at a local service center, check your owner’s manual. Some watch companies service their own products while others contract with service centers to make repairs. These authorized service centers will have the parts needed to repair your watch immediately available, they will be very familiar with the brand and the procedures for servicing it, and they will be regulated by the watchmakers to a certain extent. Taking your watch to an unauthorized service center could lead to lengthy or, even worse, shoddy repairs that will harm the integrity of your family heirloom.

When should expensive watches be sent in for repairs? First and foremost, check your owner’s manual for the watch manufacturer’s recommended servicing schedule. Mechanical watches typically need to be serviced more often, meaning once every couple of years. Otherwise, they may lose their accuracy or water-resistance. Quartz analog watches require less servicing than mechanical watches. Some basic servicing needs to be done every couple of years accompanying battery changes, but they won’t need a full servicing for six to ten years. A full digital quartz watch doesn’t actually require any servicing except for a change of batteries.

While the time and continual investment required for keeping a high quality watch in tip top shape is more than one might expect, expensive watches have an undeniable appeal. For wealthy adventurers, the $3,500 Breitling Emergency watch sends an SOS signal to a search and rescue station close by and will lead to a search and rescue operation by aircraft to find you. If you’re a stylish heiress who is unlikely to require rescuing, you might be interested in the $65,000 Patek Philippe dress watch with 264 hand set, high quality baguette diamonds. While most of us can only dream of owning such watches, it is important for the lucky few who do own high quality watches to keep their possessions in the best shape possible to preserve for future generations.

WT01 Watches: Buy the Watch That is Right for You

By Hein Kok

Buying a watch can be an enjoyable experience that does not cause you to feel buyer’s remorse later on. However, if you are not careful, then you will end up regretting your purchase. So, buy the watch that is right for! Here is how you do it:

A watch most conform to your personality, your choice of brand, and the price.

Personality: What type of person are you? Charismatic? Stylish? Fashion conscious? Elegant? Sporty? Reserved? Your personality should be reflected in the watch you buy. It should be an extension of your personality and spirit. Look at what type of clothing you enjoy wearing and what your interests are so that you can make the best possible choice.

Brand: Do you know the brand? The most recognizable watch brands often provide superior quality and design. Most brands create sporty and stylish watches for example, Tag-Heuer have gold watches that are designed with the corporate employee in mind. However, they also have great sports watches that are endorsed by sportsmen like Tiger Woods, Yao Ming, and Kimi Raikkonen. Buy a recognizable brand for a wide range of choice and quality.

Price: This category is very influential in determining which watch you buy. I find that there is a threshold of around $1,000 that separates cheaper, less stylish, more basic watches from expensive, extremely stylish, detailed, and luxurious watches that are made of gold and are diamond-encrusted. Watches above this $1,000 threshold are Rolex, Cartier, IWC, and Breitling. However, other watch brands’ exclusive watches also cost more than $1,000, like Tag-Heuer for example. You MUST compare prices from different stores in order to get the best deal!

Re-weddification? 30th Anniversay

What a pleasure it was to spend the afternoon and evening with Jill and Martin, and their two kids - (I hope I have remembered their names correctly) Sara and Liz. Jill and Martin were celebrating their thirtieth wedding anniversary by having a re-weddification as they called it. One might also call it a renwal of vows.

At my suggestion, we started the photography at their home - just a few blocks from mine in north Berkeley.

Along the way to their house, I passed Jane Hammond working in her garden. I stopped to say hello to Jane, who is one of the Bay Area's top caterers. Her East Bay Office #: 510.528.3530.

Fortunately, Jane new Jill and Martin, and reminded me which house was theirs so that I wouldn't have to search for house numbers.

The bride was still getting ready when I arrived. So, the kids and I created some portraits. In their living room I set up my favorite, The Wall of Light, which was my lighting for almost the entire day, in three additional settings.

The twinkle in the eye, actually the reflection of the light source, is called a catchlight. I'll write about that in another blog entry. You might want to pay attention to it's placement in my portraits.

Here are a few more:
