Month of October at Studioplex

I don't get out as much as I used to. By saying "getting out", I mean, I don't get out of the house in the way of shopping like I used to. Isn't that what a girl likes to do? We need to shop, it's part of the whole guy "hunts", girl "shops" thing, right?

We grab our friends, maybe buy some coffee or grab a bite to eat, and shop. I used to make a weekly habit of it. When I had my 9 to 5 sales job, I would go to a "meeting" where it was conveniently located next to a lunching/shopping area, and shop. There's that whole adrenaline rush you get, yeah you know what I'm talking about, when you find that really good deal... Anyways, you're wondering where am I going with this as a jewelry artist? Well, there is this live/work community in Inman Park called Studioplex. I never heard of it until recently, or maybe I've been under a rock, I dunno. But, all I know is that I need to spend some more time downtown and do what a girl does best, shop...

And to float my own boat, Throwing Stars Jewelry is a part of a A Fine Market for the month of October at Studioplex. I got a glimpse of who will be down there for the month, and I have a feeling I'll be doing some damage to the checking account, by of course, SHOPPING!

Here are a couple of factoids: A Fine Market at Studioplex is a 1st time event in Atlanta. It's an urban market featuring local designers and artists. (Which means it's really cool and unique!) It's open from 11:00am to 9:00pm, Tues thru Saturday and 12:00pm to 5:00pm Sunday. CLOSED ON MONDAYS

Chocolate Diamond Rings

When I first heard about chocolate diamond rings, I was puzzled. Is it a fancy term for the newest product from Hershey's? It was later that I found out that this unique jewelry item is created with chocolate diamonds, which are members of the brown diamond family. Other diamonds under this category would be champagne, cinnamon, cognac, clove and honey diamonds.

A chocolate diamond is given its name because of its color. The diamond is brownish in hue, giving it that "chocolatey" color. They can be sorted into three main categories: synthetic, natural, and heat-treated. Brown synthetic diamonds are created by incorporating nickel and nitrogen in to the diamond, giving it that brown color; these types of chocolate diamonds are easily identified due to the nickel content. Natural chocolate diamonds are by its term "naturally" made. These diamonds get their colors due to extended lattice defects, with discoloration being the most likely candidate. Treating lattice defects by applying heat creates heat-treated diamonds. This process would make the diamonds lighter in color than the dark chocolate varieties.

Chocolate diamonds have their own unique characteristics and are made more beautiful by having a gold setting. Most of the chocolate diamond rings available are set in 18K gold and are normally paired with white diamonds. There are websites available that offer different settings for your ring.

Some people may still not be open to the idea of having a chocolate diamond for an engagement ring, as the ideal would be to have a classic diamond for engagement. Personally, I think they have a really unique and playful appeal. Imagine saying, "I got engaged and I got this yummy chocolate diamond ring!" Brooch Diplomacy - Madeleine Albright Communicates with Jewelry

If Michelle Obama is ushering in a new era of power brooch diplomacy, she wouldn’t be the first. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a tenacious negotiator, loved to communicate her mood and intentions through her brooches, and now the Museum of Arts & Design in New York will exhibit 200 of her favorites.

Albright "found that what she wore and how she presented herself had a lot of interpretive meaning to those she was with," said Holly Hotchner, the museum's director. "The pins became an added way that she communicated as secretary of state."

"Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection," scheduled to open today, comes 10 years after the museum presented "Brooching It Diplomatically," a show of pins created by contemporary artists inspired by the ones Albright wore.

"She started acquiring pins because of their inherent messages, their whimsical and pictorial quality," said David Revere McFadden, the museum's chief curator. "It's not about jewels and gems, it's about jewelry as a communication device."

The collection is diverse, ranging from Americana styles — including flags and eagles — to ones with flora, fauna and insect themes. She always brought a selection with her on her travels so she could be ready for any situation.

For instance, Albright chose to wear a bee pinwhenever she felt talks amounted to "something like a sting," McFadden said.

"It's a very gentle way of saying to whomever she is speaking to: 'Listen carefully because I'm kind of telling you where I think this conversation is going,"' he said.

When she thought negotiations would likely go well, she would wear a balloon pin. Another pin, made of stainless steel, shows the head of Lady Liberty with two watch faces for eyes, one of which is upside down. The pin allows both her and others to check the time.

I wonder how many times Albright said the word ‘pinhead’ during the Bush administration?

The exhibition, running from Sept. 30 though Jan. 31, 2010, will be accompanied by a book, "Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box," written by Albright.
