Gems in Greenwich

I like visiting Greenwich, on the river in south-east London. Its maritime and scientific heritage permeates the air and is immediately detectable when one alights from the London commuter train. The grand buildings of the Queen’s House, Greenwich Hospital and the Royal Observatory, all within walking distance of the station, are the finest examples of the English interpretation of Baroque architecture.

Not quite of that epoch is the modern hotel venue of my latest one-day diamond grading course arranged by the NPA for pawnbrokers. A dozen attendees from Eastern England learnt more of diamond identification, particularly how the loupe, when utilised correctly with a sceptical and enquiring mind, is a more powerful aid than a so-called ‘diamond tester’.

Judging quality and size of diamonds were considered with emphasis on the benefits of using a millimetre gauge to estimate carat size as a superior means than the ‘hole gauge’plates still made use of by many pawnbrokers. One of the intentions of these short workshops is to demonstrate to pawnbrokers that there is more to establishing diamond values than guessing stone weights.

Experimenting

Some time ago I did some mono printing onto silk. I have tried several processes with the silk, none so far have been successful. First of all I tried free machining, it just made to many holes even using the finest sewing machine needle. Then I tried using some felt as a backing, this was far too lumpy for the soft silk.

So the silk has been set aside waiting for the next idea. In the mean time I have some photographs of the printing glass, that have digitally altered.

Blue: Cool, Clear Aquamarine

Wow, even the name connotes shimmering, coolness! Not just aqua, but also marine! A member of the beryl family of gemstones (the same family as the emerald), aquamarine ranges from light to deep blue, and is readily available in high-clarity specimens, unlike the emerald. Since the 1400's, it has been considered the March birthstone (but before then, it was the October birthstone!). Aquamarine is a fairly durable gemstone, having a hardness of 7.5 - 8.0 on the Mohs' scale (10 is maximum hardness). Legendarily, it is a symbol of health, youth and hope!

More on determining your ring size

If you don't already know your ring size, it is really not possible to determine it with any accuracy without actually trying on several different-size rings to see how they fit. Too bad it is not as easy as measuring your waist size with a tape measure! Check our our Ring Size Help Page on our website for more info.

On that help page, we offer a "Ring Size Guide" which contains a number of circles which represented ring sizes from small to large. The idea is to put a correctly fitting ring that you already have down on the paper to find its size. But, the problem with such a document (similar ones are offered on other jewelry websites) is that you must print it exactly right in order for it to be useful--if your printer setup is wrong, then the document will print at the wrong size, and all of the ring sizes will be wrong! And, even if everything is set up correctly, and the document prints at the correct size, there is still a lot of room for error. This is because it is difficult to see the circles on the inside of some rings because of they are tapered and don't fit flat on the paper, or they have a beveled edge which hides the circle. So, if you decide to use our guide, make sure you follow the printing instructions, and use a US quarter to make sure it printed correctly.

Instead of just printing the sizing guide, though, we highly recommend that our customers order our $2.00 ring size kit, (pictured) which contains a number of punch-out plastic rings, graduated in half sizes, so that you can actually try on different sizes. It is shipped via first class mail, and it will arrive just a few days after you order it--you don't even have to leave the house!

Another method is to go to a local jewelry counter in a department store to get help with sizing. We encourage you to evaluate their jewelry offerings while you are there--just remember to always look at gold quality and weight of their jewelry, and if it is a diamond piece, ask about the diamond quality (color, clarity, cut and weight). If you can't get that information from them, there is no way you can comparison-shop! Notice that on our website, we give complete specifications for all of our jewelry.

Finally, remember that if you do find that you ordered one of our rings in the wrong size, all is not lost! We will be happy to re-size the ring for you for a small charge--just email us to let us know what the new ring size should be, and we will respond with instructions. Or, you can take your ring to a local jeweler and have them re-size it for you--just call a few stores to find out what they charge, because it could vary considerably. Our charge will no doubt be less, but it will take longer because of shipping time. As always, feel free to call us if you have questions!

Aishwarya Rai Still High In International Endorsing Product

It is no longer the face of brands like Coca-Cola and Nakshatra diamond jewelry from India, Aishwarya Rai, but is always high on the success of riding and duration of international endorsements.

Aishwarya Rai has completed nearly a decade of approval Swiss luxury watch brand Longines and international Lux soap. It was also the brand ambassador of global hair care brand L'Oréal since 2003.

Noted ad-man Prahlad Kakkar says Aishwarya is sought by well-known brands because it is more than just an actress and is often seen as an ambassador of India.

"Aishwarya Rai has never been a big or major endorser of Indian products. It has an impressive list of international brands, its name and because it is not just an actress who can be judged on the failures and successes, but the fact that it is a representative of the Indian woman and is an ambassador of the country, "Kakkar, who made his reputation as Sanju in 1993 TV commercial for Pepsi, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Even the representatives of the brands that feel Aishwarya approves it adds a new dimension to their products.

"Aishwarya Rai has been associated with us since 1999 and is a great help. Not only in this country but also globally, "Charles Villoz, Vice President (sales) of Longines International, had already said.

"People all over the world love Bollywood films and they will housefull. Whenever we traveled (with Aishwarya) the response was tremendous. It is a face, and we would like to continue this association as long as possible, "said Villoz.

For Aishwarya Rai, who made his presence felt through the English-language films like "Bride and Prejudice", "Mistress of Spices", "provoked" and "Pink Panther 2 ', the signature film and Visa been very selective case.

When she was approached to promote L'Oreal's cream bleach the skin, the beauty queen became an actress refused because she did not want to approve such a product especially in India, where color is an issue , said a source close to Aishwarya Rai.

"Whether it is films or endorsements, I am - and have been - very selective about my work. I take a job that suits me and is my schedule, "Aishwarya told IANS.

"I do not take projects that I can not handle because I believe in all respect the commitments made by me," she added.

Much has been said about dipping popularity Bollywood Aishwarya approval of the reign of Queen at 24-year-old Katrina Kaif replaced as the face of Nakshatra jewelry last year.

And speculation was widespread about the reason for the replacement, saying that Katrina has been roped in to add more youthfullness to the mark. He apparently was Aishwarya who have decided to disassociate itself from the image.

"There was a lot of noise when Hurricane Katrina as an ambassador of the Nakshatra brand. But is not that Aishwarya was dethroned, because the brand has been branching into the different accessories, the "source close to the former Miss World said.

"Ash had signed to De Beers Nakshatra brand. Later, De Beers sold the brand to Gitanjali group and they began to branch into accessories like hairbands, clips, etc. This is when she decided to disassociate itself from the brand, and later he is delivered to Katrina, "the source told IANS on condition of anonymity.

Aishwarya Rai, who celebrated his second wedding anniversary with actor husband Abhishek Bachchan Monday, also had personal reasons to withdraw his association with Coca-Cola, one of the biggest brands, it has been approved in India .

"Aishwarya Rai has never been asked to leave out a product, it has always been her own decision. When she left Coca-Cola, it was a decision only after it was going to marry because the Bachchans Abhishek no longer believe in the promotion and approval of soft drinks, "added the source.

Turn Me on Design (TMOD)

Sometimes communication needs to be taken to a different level, somewhere deeper and internal, where it can resonate and bypass the typical “in one ear and out the other” method.

Sydney-based designers Georgie Swift and Milenka Osen of Turn Me on Design (TMOD), whose previous Smoke & Mirrors collection featured puzzle-solving jewelry, such as three-dimensional maze cubes and interlocking keys, recently collaborated with artist Andy Uprock for a new interactive series entitled /\poetry in braille/\.

Uprock, known for large floating cup street installations, imparts his Cuprocking vision to this range of sterling silver pieces, with TMOD evolving them into smaller, dearer, more intimate elements. Necklaces and rings flaunting cascading miniature cups and industrial cones are textured with Braille phrases serenely promoting community and integration. Tiered signpost pendants twist to reveal thoughts in English and Braille, melding the two languages into one. And Pagoda-shaped rings, dangled upside-down on chains, conceal poetic streams along the interior.

Life

It is ages since I posted an entry on here. Life has rather taken over. Not that much has been created either, but I do have some new notebooks. This time I have used coloured papers for the covers.



Inspired by Gardeners World last night I headed off to the garden centre this morning for some plug plants. One 2" x 2" pot has given me 30 geraniums plants and another of equal size 40 petunias. Many of these will have to be found a good home. I simply love this time of the year when everything is reawakening. Planting seeds and nurturing them.

An established client stops me in the Garden to enquire of my diamond courses. “Please tell your students that fluorescence is not a bad thing” he implores me. I agree. It seems the diamond industry considers fluorescence, the glow seen when gems are bathed in ultra-violet light, as a negative attribute and many will not trade a fluorescent diamond.
Which is a pity as a soft blue glow may lift the appearance of an off-colour stone.
I suspect many in the diamond industry do not know what causes the phenomenon and cannot explain it to consumers. The undesirability of fluorescent diamonds is reinforced by published prices for such diamonds at discounted levels to non-fluorescent stones.
But explained in positive terms I believe fluorescence can be made into an appealing element of diamond.

We all know the 4cs of diamond quality: Carat weight, Colour, Clarity and Cut but I’ve just read of another mnemonic set. In an article printed in the latest addition of The Jeweller, a UK trade journal published by the National Association of Goldsmiths (the trade association for retail jewellers) there is some timely suggestions on how enterprises should be thinking about when planning to respond to the problems posed by the developing recession.

The ‘new’ four Cs are Cash, Customers, Costs and Confidence. Nothing original in the article about conserving ready money, exceeding the needs of consumers and controlling overheads but a useful summary ending with the call to celebrate any positive developments in ones business. Today these new 4Cs should be addressed in our daily ‘to do’ lists.
