There is an aura of mysticism that surrounds sapphires. All ancient lore woven around this magnificent stone adds to its appeal. A popular belief about the emergence of this stone is that the Earth was part of a colossal sapphire that lent the skies its azure blue color. In ancient times, Sapphires were believed to possess mystical powers - priests used these gems to help them interpret Oracles, kings wore sapphire to protect them from wicked thoughts and impress divine favor.
The Greeks considered sapphires to be sacred because of its divine blue color and associated the gemstone to their Sky God - Zeus. Sapphire in earlier times was regarded as a symbol of truth, candor and endurance. It was believed that if a disloyal lover or spouse wore a sapphire, the brilliance of the gemstone would dim. All over the world Sapphire was considered with awe and admiration. Buddhists believed that blue sapphire urged a desire to pray thereby giving rise to peace of mind, serenity, joy and spiritual enlightenment.
The Bible on the other hand names sapphire as the stone on which the Ten Commandments were engraved and given to Moses. Even today, one doesn’t cease to fall easy prey to the intriguing loveliness of sapphires.
