Carat Or Clarity?
The gemstone shopper’s ultimate question – carat or clarity? The ultimate answer – whatever. Bad joke. But sincerely it all depends on the type of gemstone you are looking for and of course on your preference.
Some species of gemstones naturally occur with more inclusions than others. For instance sapphires, rubies and emeralds are usually more included as compared to gemstones like citrine, aquamarine, amethyst etc. Thus while a moderately included sapphire is desirable, a moderately included citrine would have to be heavily discounted in its cost considering the inclusions. Inclusions are a very important criterion of the gemstone cost, but the value is determined depending on the type of gemstone. An eye-clean is rare and costs very high but an eye-clean aquamarine can be commonly found, so it doesn’t cost the earth.
The value logic in case of carat is the same. For some gemstones size is a big determining factor since large sizes is an extreme rarity. A little increase in size would increase an emerald’s cost substantially but citrines in large sizes can be commonly found, so though the cost goes up with size but not in that proportion.
Like I said, it all depends on your preference. If size matters to you, play around with clarity. Choose a gemstone that has inclusion but the inclusions do not mar the gemstones face-up beauty or make it brittle. And if clarity is your criteria, look for your gem in smaller size, or look for shapes like marquise, pear other than round that look bigger in those shapes.

If you're looking at a ring and can get a loupe or magnifying glass, have a good look at the facets of the stone. Fake diamond or CZs of any age will almost definitely show light scratching and scuffing – but a real diamond is very unlikely to. If you have a diamond jewelry - ring pendant or earring - observe the mounting on the ring. If the setting is good quality and it does not have the initial CZ (cubic zirconium) there is a possibility your diamond could be real.
If you are still in doubt, I recommend you to take your diamond or diamond jewelry to a jeweler. They can perform a more thorough test to insure your precious stone is real.

Shop NBC host, jewelry designer and breast cancer survivor Neda Behnam has created a new company called Diamonds for a Cure (DFAC) which will join the growing number of companies raising funds for cancer research.
The first two offerings capitalize on the current trend for rough diamond jewelry. A 4ct. natural pink diamond flower ring set in rose gold sells for $2,499.99 but only $100 goes to cancer research. An 18k white gold rough diamond pendant with a polished diamond center stone on either a black or pink silk cord sells for $549.93 and $50 goes to breast cancer research.
The idea is admirable but compared to other jewelry lines, the amount given for charity seems a bit low.via

Ash and memento pendants
We occasionally have a customer ask us if they can place the ashes of their loved one, or soil from a special location, into one of our lockets. The answer to that question is, unfortunately, that we do not recommend it. This is because a locket is not designed to contain such granular materials--there is usually a small gap where the two portions of the locket meet, and any material such as ash or sand will quickly escape through that opening as soon as the locket is worn. And, when the locket is opened, more of the material would be lost.But, we do carry pendants which are specially designed for just such uses. For example, pictured here is our Silver Heart Ash Memento Pendant, which is a solid sterling silver vial in the shape of a heart, accented with yellow gold plating.
