Monochromatic Fashion

Fashion is an ever evolving process. What is in vogue today may not be in circulation tomorrow. That’s how the cycle of fashion works. The trick lies in making the most of what are the current fashion scenes. Fashion is all about diverse combinations of textures, styles and colors in an interesting way. Following fashion trend implies playing with latest things and flaunting your own persona. I am pretty sure, many of you must have heard of monochromatic dressing sense. Definition wise, monochromatic fashion is all about wearing a single color from head to toe. It could be any particular color. The best advantage of this mode of fashion is in appearance. Monochromatic dressing sense makes one look slimmer and taller. That’s quite encouraging for a start. That effect takes place from vertical illusion created by monochromatic dresses.

To make your outfit more interesting and appealing, you can use different textures of the same color. Despite the fact that color of top and trouser is same, just using different texture will create all the necessary effects and compliments are bound to come your way. Variations in textures provide that much needed aesthetic dimensions that are so essential for making a style statement. One can use different textures like tweeds, ribbing, jacquards and knits etc to bring the effect. Apart from that adding pattern is another wonderful option. Those looking for slight variation can use changes in color palette.

Personalize T Shirts

I love these personalised wedding Tees from PWP Online for two reasons. They make a great wedding gift for a bride and groom, and the cute pink and blue 'Just Married' is ideal for honeymooners happy to show off their new status and husband and wife. The T-shirt is also printed with the wedding date, solving the problem of husbands forgetting anniversaries - all a wife has to do is don the T shirt a few days before the important event and hope that her dearest hubby gets the hint.

Or is that hoping too much??

If you are a little more sceptical about the whole nuptial affair, then perhaps you will enjoy this T shirt more.

Elegant and timeless: Caroline Castigliano

Elegant and timeless are words that have been used describe the designs of Caroline Castigliano. This season the words classic, chic, and contemporary can be added to her repertoire as Castigliano adds a touch of whimsy to her stunning designs.

Fitted bodices with flowing skirts in tone on tone white and ivory have always been a Castigliano signature. Added to this classic silhouette for spring are modern details every bride will love. Castigliano has chosen to play with fabric textures and layering to create a truly romantic collection. Unusual bits of contrast such as a slim ribbon of black at the waist or a soft metallic rose on the bodice add a stylish contemporary touch.

When asked how she conceives her designs Castigliano has been quoted as saying, “I imagine a ‘muse’: she may be an actress or celebrity or even a student that I see on the street and I will be inspired by her image – I then start creating gowns that would be amazing specifically for her. Generally the gowns develop from there until in the end they have a personality of their own.”

What makes a Castigliano bridal gown exceptional? They not only look good, they feel good, too! When designing each gown Castigliano considers the form of the dress and the shape of the body. Corsetry is constructed to make the gown fit and fall correctly. Brides will find that each Castigliano boutique works from the inside out when personally fitting gowns. If the corsetry is not correct the dress will not feel or look right.

Castigliano is well known for this exacting fit. Her early career in America as a sportswear designer has given her a unique understanding of the need for comfort and construction. ‘Survival Fit’, an upscale active wear line designed by Castigliano in Miami, Florida was sold in such luminous stores as Saks and Macy’s.

In 1990 Castigliano realized her dream of designing bridal gowns. Returning to the UK she took her knowledge of fit and form and opened her first bridal store in Surrey. Her designs became instantly popular and led to the opening of more stores, now totaling nine.

Blue Sapphire Eternity Band

Blue Sapphire Eternity Band in 18k White Gold

The continuous symmetry of round blue sapphires and diamonds in this eternity ring lends to it an air of exclusiveness. The stones are pave set in white gold.

Walking home from Bond Street, I pass my ‘local’ museum, the excellent Wallace Collection, where my eyes are attracted to their wall poster “Treasures of the Black Death – amazing unseen jewels”.

Intrigued, I pop down to their basement exhibition to view these gem-set pieces. Here, on display for the first time in London, are two hoards of 13th and 14th century silver and gold jewels unearthed in France and Germany. Both hoards were buried, it’s believed, by Jewish merchants fleeing their communities in mid Europe at the time of the Black Death in the mid 14th century.

Silver coins and silver vessels are showcased but what attracted my gemmological eyes were the gem-set brooches particularly the simple symmetry of a ruby, sapphire and pearl brooch. The central octagonal ruby is faceted whereas the other gems are cabochons, all in rub-over, backed (possibly painted) settings (‘pie-crust’ according to the literature). The tiny baroque pearls, European river pearls I assume, are fully drilled in the mount. All gems stand proud, are quite small so difficult to study, even with the ‘granny lenses’ supplied.

It is surprising to realise the eye-catching jewel was made in the second quarter of the 14th century and to contemplate the wide-spread trade in gems at that time which made its construction possible.

Well worth jewellery markers/designers and gemmologists attending this exhibition before it closes in mid May.

Be aware of surface blemishes of diamonds for engagement rings

Apart from internal flaws, diamonds have external blemishes also. Both the flaws and blemishes make the diamond more affordable to purchase. You should not purchase the diamond having certain blemishes when it is to be molded on an engagement ring.

Amongst these blemishes, pits are the serious ones. These are the holes that you can find on surface facets of diamonds. However, if the pits are shallow, you can ask the jeweler to fill them by polishing. Then, diamonds have scratches too and can be eliminated by polishing.

Diamonds have nicks too. But these are not harmful blemishes. These are chips on the diamond surface and can be polished to eliminate them. So, watch for these blemishes of diamonds when asking the jeweler to mold them on diamond engagement rings.

White Dresses at the Oscars

White dresses were all the rage at the Oscars this week. Nina Calloway at About.com weddings gives us the run down of who was wearing what from Sarah Jessica Parker to Jennifer Aniston.

Check out her gallery of white dresses at the Oscars.

Love it:
It is hard to pick a winner from so many beautiful and stylish women, but Nancy O Dell really stood out for me, in this amazing, slinky number.

Hate It:
Marion Cotillard's strange fishy Jean Paul Gautier gown came a close second, but Jessica Biel's Prada gown gets my vote for the worst white dress on the red carpet, looking more like a roomy bathrobe wrap than a glamorous Hollywood dress.

My favourite Oscars dress?

The Randi Rahm gown worn by Maria Menounos- imagine it in white for a sumptous, glamorous wedding gown!

The writer over at Blissful Vows is a blogger after my own heart. They have just featured a look behind the scenes of one of my favourite bridal designers, Jim Hjelm. Although he may not be a household name, he is certainly a darling of the couture and celebrity world, and for good reason. Hjelm designs are always so tasteful and flattering, with a depth of detail that is not often seen in modern day fashions.

My personal favourite from their 2009 range is this low backed sheath design which reflects the current taste for vintage nicely, with a champagne colour and plenty of lace.

Blissful Vows promise to be featuring more from other designers in the near future, so I highly recommend following me over there for a look.

What your watch says about you

IF you want to give a man a present he’ll enjoy, buy him a nice watch. It’s a sad indictment of society’s addiction to global designer images that these days men can’t happily strut around the place festooned in gold ornaments like Mr. T at Christmas. But we can blow small fortunes on nice watches.

Expensive modern watches are like little sports cars: the more costly and complex the machinery, the more glory reflects on your wallet (wallet is a euphemism, obviously).

Sadly, it’s not a simple market. It’s subtle, complex, and scientifically designed to appeal to every sector of the male demographic from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Woody Allen. And you can tell a lot about a man’s true personality from the watch he wears. Remember, advertising is designed to appeal to the "real" you – the things you buy tell the world who you want to be.

So let’s get in the Christmas spirit and have a good sneer at other people’s jewellery because it’s either bigger and better than yours, or smaller and weaker than yours. This is a game for boys and girls.

Omega Man

Omega Man, bless him, wants to be James Bond. This connection between Bond and his fancy watch has been played up for years. Next time you’re at a posh do, look for a gentleman in an immaculate tux who is wearing a huge diver’s watch with a bright orange bezel. There’s a good chance he’ll be hovering near important people pretending he’s a bodyguard, or even a policeman. But don’t completely write him off as a potential friend. He may be soft in the head, but he must have some cash. It’s a posh do, he’s in a nice tux, and the watch cost about five grand.

Wearers of vintage Omegas, picked up cheap on eBay, are usually mild-mannered types, like up-market train-spotters.

Tag Wearer

Tag Heuer has tied its branding to super-cool Tiger Woods. That middle-aged, 21-stone shouty bloke in the advertising department thinks he’s like Tiger Woods because he’s got a Tag Carrera (around three grand, maybe more). Well he’s not, is he? He’s fat and shouty. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with fat and shouty, but it’s exactly what Tiger Woods isn’t.

Wearers of vintage Tag Heuers, picked up cheap on eBay, are usually mild-mannered types, like up-market train-spotters.

Breitling

Ah Breitling, the Bentley of gent’s wristwatches. Nothing says “I am the boss. Yah yah! I’m brilliant I am. You, with your rubbish little cheap, crappy watches are no good, but I’m marvellous. Look at the size of those diamonds. Go on, count ‘em. I dare ya!” quite like a Breitling. Rod Stewart is very fond of this brand, and gives them away like peanuts to Arctic Monkeys and the like.

Wearers of vintage Breitlings, picked up cheap on eBay, are usually mild-mannered types, like up-market train-spotters.

Bell & Ross

The Bell & Ross brand is all based on airplane cockpits: watches that look like fuel dials and altimeters and the like. What little lad doesn’t get excited by jet aircraft? Unfortunately, the range starts at around three grand a pop. It’s a very lucky little boy that can enjoy playing at pilots in this price range before he grows out of it.

Wearers of vintage Bell & Ross watches, picked up cheap on eBay, are usually mild-mannered types, like up-market train-spotters.

Watch Out

That’s just a few of the many hilarious wristwatch options out there. Keep an eye on glossy ads for more clues for future fun. Which watch are you buying?

Wedding Dresses - Let the Groom Have a Say

by Nadi Baruch

Tradition has it in Western cultures that the groom does not see what the bride is wearing until the wedding day. This makes it rather difficult for the groom to have any say at all! The groom will, however, have some idea of the sort of wedding that is being planned; he will know if it's traditional or modern. Time was that the groom didn't have a chance either to see or to say anything about the wedding dress and offer his view on what he wants his beautiful bride to look like on their wedding day.

Today's bride is definitely more concerned about the groom's opinion and tries to balance her decision by including his views in the process to make her wedding dream become a reality. Some brides even allow the groom to go with them when they choose a wedding gown, and listen to his opinion. The options for a wedding dress are endless; some grooms wants to see their bride more conservative, some simple, others sexy, elegant, or even like a Hollywood star. The wedding dress is a very important part of the overall picture where the bride has the main say, but there are other aspects of the wedding where the groom can participate and help out and offer his opinion.

Before going out there to find your perfect wedding gown the best idea is to have a little chat and come up with the decision on how much would you like to spend for your wedding dress as well the budget for the whole wedding. From this point on it will be easier for you and your groom to plan that unforgettable wedding. Just how much do men think that the bride should be paying for that dress? This only becomes an issue if the bride and groom are paying for it. If the brides parents are stumping up the cash, what the heck! The amount also depends on the budget, of course: some folks can just afford more than others, so it's not an easy one to answer. Prices range from a couple hundred US Dollars to a couple thousand and more. The important thing is that the groom has to be happy with how costs are portioned out and it's not unreasonable that more should be spent on the bride than on the groom even in these days of equality.

In these enlightened times, if the groom does, indeed, get a chance to choose the dress with the bride, or at least see some photos, catalogs or visit some websites, then we have to admit that times have changed; the groom will as often as not nowadays want to have some input; after all, the bride will surely want to have a say in what HE is wearing, won't she?

The key to this is to discuss and come to an agreement on style and price BEFORE the bride goes off looking. That way, the marriage will begin as it's meant to go on.

Essential Guidelines To Explore Your Ideas On Bridal Hairstyles!

Do you know how to make your bridal hairstyle exceptionally beautiful?

People say, even highly experienced hairstylists might not be able to offer you something exceptionally perfect for your taste or personality, though they have a great collection of bridal hairstyles for their clients.

But, if you are in search of something new or something no one ever saw or wore on any wedding occasion, then it is not impossible for you to get it, but it becomes quite tough task for you.

Here are certain simple guidelines which can help you to explore your taste and style.

Explore new ideas if you can’t imagine!

If you are unable to make your imagination work, then try to discover fresh ideas of bridal hair styles by referring numerous magazines or websites.

When you find something interesting, try to make a copy of it. However, it is not necessary for you to have a same copy of it. Rather, you can add more changes to it, according to your taste and style.

Try to be creative!

Accessories are one of the best ways to make your bridal hairstyle look spectacular on your wedding day.

Vintage hair combs or bejeweled hair sticks are a good choice for your bridal hairstyle.

So, try to choose your bridal accessories wisely. If you don’t want to spend more money on these accessories, you can use your old ear rings, cuff links, brooch or other jewelry items as your bridal hairstyle accessories.

Try to use flowers to decorate!

Flowers are also one of the greatest ways that can make your bridal hairstyle to look awesome. Keeping your taste and style in consideration, try to choose suitable flowers for decorating your hair.

Follow these simple tips!

Take proper care of your hair, prior to your wedding ceremony. If you have healthy and well-managed hair, then it becomes much easier for you to style your hair.

Try to finalize your bridal hairstyle before finalizing the accessories for your hairstyle. It is also very important for you to check whether the accessories match with your bridal hair style or not. So, try to make a perfect combination.

Always schedule your appointment much in advance with your hairstylist. This is due to the reason that an elegant hairstyle is not done in the last moment and it certainly takes some time to get a gorgeous look.

So, consider all these essential guidelines and make your wedding event a memorable moment in your life.

I was astounded to see this video clip the other day and couldn't wait to share it with everyone I knew. Maybe you've seen it already, but it's short film showing the incredible transformation of an everyday woman into a billboard model. It's a fascinating watch and it captures the modern day distortion of our natural beauty, into an unreal portrayal of what we now perceive as a 'perfect' woman

Fashion Mantra

Our dressing sense greatly defines the balance of our body. To show your balance of body, you can use subtle mix of colors. They say, one should always wear dark colors where he or she is large and light colors where smaller. For example large hips are most suitable with wearing dark skirts. One should not go for tight clothes; rather fit clothes are more suitable. Fit clothes help in appearing slim whereas tight clothes have this nasty effect of making you even larger. Those with few extra pounds can always go for set-in sleeves with shoulder pads. These shoulder pads add the desired effect to your shoulders. If you are interested in appearing taller, go for solid color clothes with simple lines.

Try to avoid black color during summer or in a wedding ceremony. If you are interested in making your legs appear long then use straight leg pants. If you have heavy arms then wear tops or dresses with scoop neckline. Make sure to have these with half or long sleeves so that attention is drawn towards your neck and face. Similarly, for large thighs one should wear full leg pants or straight cut skirt. While using long sleeves make sure they should not extend the wrist bone. Never ever wear a brand new shoe directly at any occasion. Try to familiarize yourself to the new pair. To appear thinner, go for skinner stripe. One can also use pinstripe suit to appear slimmer and taller.

The Basics Behind Michelle Obama's Look - Necklace

This look is sure to become a fashion trend. On the cover of the January 18, 2009 issue of Parade magazine, Michelle Obama wears a sleeveless dress in the purple family with three neckline embellishments. These embellishments may be an actual part of the dress. However, this look is very easy to duplicate with brooches or label pins.

Michelle Obama’s Look

Her necklace shows three embellishments. All three are circular in shape; the two side pieces flanking the center are smaller – about ½ the size in diameter. The color combinations are both complementary and a tint.

The larger circle piece is orange, yellow and lime green in color. These colors are complementary to the color of the dress, which is purple. The two smaller circles are lavender, which is a tint of purple. A tint is the color plus white.
Duplicate Michelle Obama’s Look

To make sure this look works, address these three factors:

1. Select brooches or pins that are not too heavy
2. Pick a garment made from fabric with body that is fairly close-fitting at the neckline
3. Choose brooch colors that harmonize with each other and the garment

If the brooches are too heavy and the garment fabric has too much give, the look just will not work. The neckline will fall forward from the chest area, creating an unattractive gap that will hide the brooches.

Carefully consider the color combinations. Complementary colors are those that are opposite each other on a color wheel. A complete color wheel, available at any arts and crafts store, will show the complementary color combination for primary, secondary and tertiary colors. It is visually very striking to pair complementary colors. The key to pairing complementary colors is to make sure that one is dominant.
Where to Find Brooches

Amazon.com has a wide array of beautiful costume brooches in all sizes. The image shown on this page is by Pugster and will make an attractive complementary center brooch for yellow/green or turquoise garments. Tonally, it would also work on a purple garment. The brooch retails on Amazon.com for $19.32. To create interest make sure the accent brooches are approximately ½ the size of the center brooch.

Check out what is already available in household jewelry boxes. The brooches don’t necessarily have to be circular in shape. Maybe there is a favorite pin such as the cat image shown on this page. Combine that with two small circular or triangular gold label pins for a striking look on a black garment.

It’s easy to make a trio of pins. The star image shown on this page is a hand-crafted pin given as a Christmas present a couple of decades ago. Make a similar one by purchasing a tin pin form at a craft shop. Glue beads and other decorations to the pin form with craft glue.

Experiment with the look. Run the three brooches vertically down the center front of the garment or attach them to the lapel of a jacket. They’ll also look fashion forward attached to a fabric purse.

Bella Figura Winner

Hey guys, just wanted to pop in and let Sara know she is the WINNER!

Here's her comment:

I am still in need of invitations for my June wedding - we have had a few last minute "surprises" that have kept us from moving forward with purchasing them. Not to mention the fiance and I can't seem to agree on a design we both love - he likes plain, I want to make a statement. However, two designs we both agree on are the Deveril and the Odessa from Bella Figura. Both of these invitatations are simple to suit him, yet have an elegant flair that gives it the statement I need. We are getting married in a historic building and I love that both of these designs tie into the theme of the building and our wedding - timeless, elegant, classy, and yet unfussy. We don't need a lot of decorations at the church and neither do either of these invitations. They are perfect as is! The letterpress is fancier than we thought we could afford for the wedding, so the extra money would allows us to have invitations that perfectly fit the style of the wedding.

Sara - just e-mail me with you info (preppywedding@hotmail.com). For all you other gals, fear not, I have another great give-a-way brewing.

Oh and don't forget to check out Bella Figura's sister site Smock Paper for some amazing personal stationary options!

My favourite Etsy bead supplies shop is for sale...

And there's nothing I can do about it. Tamara's shop BestBeads was the second Etsy shop I ever made a purchase from, and I've been returning there ever since. And now it's for sale! I'm really happy for Tamara, since the reason for the sale is that her jewellery business is going so well. But I'm really going to miss buying my beads from her. I know, I know, someone else will take over the shop, but as you learn quickly on Etsy, it's often the person behind the business that's the real reason you come back.

Digby & Iona

Sequels, if done right, generally happen because a continuum was necessary to unfurl the remainder of an idea. More to the story, a layered vision, or just simply additional ideas sprouted from the same plane of thought.

Designer Aaron Ruff wasn't done with his Wanderer in a Sea of Fog theme, paving the way for a Volume 2 collection. The recently introduced pieces build on the maritime theme, adding captain’s signet rings to the mix of spyglasses, compasses, and old-world weaponry. We love the antique feel of this black spot ring, with intricate scrolling and fashioned for a two-finger fit.
